Preparing the canvas: The importance of a foundation primer

One of the most important steps when it comes to a makeup application is not the eye shadow, not the lipstick or applying lots of blush that we love so much – It’s the primer.

While we live in a world that moves fast, and we have little time to take good care of ourselves, primer is the step we should never skip.

The explanation is simple: just like constructing a painting, we have to start from the beginning… protecting and softening our canvas.

Primers are meant to protect the skin, smooth the fine lines, fill in pores, moisturize and make the makeup last longer! YES! It does it all! Any makeup sits perfectly after the use of a primer, it also brightens the skin giving us a natural healthy glow.

It’s important to apply them with a clean skin or after a moisturizer (if we need extra hydration…watch out if you have very oily skin you might not need moisturizer!).

You can use a sponge, brush or simply gently massage with fingers into the surface of the skin. The most important areas to apply it are the T-Zone (AKA forehead, nose, chin and partial cheeks), because that’s the area of the face that is exposed the most.

Luckily, today there are MANY options when it comes to choosing a perfect primer for your skin type.

These are my top 5 choices, I’ve tried them myself, have used them on clients. and I LOVE THEM ALL. Enjoy!

Laura Mercier Oil-free Foundation Primer was the first one on the market. A Makeup Artist MUST! One of the most popular products of all times that has revolutionized the industry of makeup. It creates a soft and invisible layer to protect the skin and makes the foundation stay all day. Ideal for oily, sensitive, and acne-prone skin types; it helps control oil.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer a mineral-based and water-resistant primer with SPF 15. This is the #1 sales product at Hourglass. It neutralizes the skin, minimizes shine by absorbing oils, and creates a smooth, uniform canvas for flawless makeup application. It’s a satin-finish formula that also minimizes the appearance of pores and soften skin imperfections and fine lines. Perfect for all skin types; just be careful if you are too dry! Make sure to use a moisturizer before!

Stila One Step Correct is the most fun looking primer! It’s a triple swirled helix serum that instantly color corrects (good for neutralizing redness and sun spots!), brightens, primes and immediately improves our skin tone and texture by smoothing fine lines. I love it on mature skin!

Urban Decay Complexion Primer Potion is an oil-free, skin-brightening moisturizing primer. Your skin will look youthful and lifted (you’ll feel your skin tighter after) and your foundation will slide on smoothly, evenly, and last longer.
